GEM Motoring Assist says that January is the ideal time to prioritize safety on your road trips.

The breakdown and road-safety organisation encourages everyone, including drivers, pedestrians and riders to consider how they can minimize risks while they are travelling.

James Luckhurst, GEM’s road safety advisor, says that now is the perfect time to think about the changes you might make.

Why not make a New Year’s Resolution to improve road safety and make smarter choices in 2024 about the way we use our roads?

“By taking action, we immediately improve safety and reduce the risk of harm to us and others on our journey.

This would reduce the number people who are killed or seriously injured each year in collisions that could have been avoided on our roads.

In 2022, there will be 1,766 fatalities and 28,941 serious injury cases in the UK. This is a 10% rise on 2021.

Four road safety tips for drivers:

  1. Before you go
Before you leave, plan and double-check your route. You won’t be lost or make rash decisions if you plan your route beforehand.
  2. Choose your speed wisely
You are responsible for the speed you choose. You cannot be told to go over the speed limit. Always choose the legal speed for your conditions.
  3. Pay Attention
Don’t be distracted by passengers, mobile phones or private thoughts. Do not be distracted by passengers or mobile phones. Don’t let yourself get tired.
  4. Stay calm and think
Pledge that you will not react to other drivers’ actions. You can’t be perfect so don’t waste your time or increase the risk of rebuking another road user. Keep your distance and stay safe.
