What You Should Know About Your RV During The Coronavirus Lockdown
The Covid-19 pandemic has been a challenge for all involved. Authorities and governments around the globe are doing all they can to limit the spread of this virus. Members of the public, however, are asked to stay home and to only leave the house for essentials or to exercise one time a day.
Numerous sporting and social events were cancelled or delayed, and many people in the UK had to postpone their vacation plans. This is not only true for international travel but also for non essential journeys.
If you are one of the 225,000 motorhome-owners in the UK, you will need to put off any planned trips for the near future. What does this mean for your car? What does this mean for your motorhome or MOT insurance? Should you apply for a statutory Off-Road Notice (SORN) as well? You may find this information useful.
SORN
You can find government guidelines on how to apply for a SORN if you are considering taking your car off the road during the Coronavirus outbreak. Ben Cue, Comfort Insurance, has answered some of the most important questions you might have about a SORN.
Do I have to inform you if I SORN the vehicle that is insured by Comfort Insurance?
You do not have to notify your insurance company if you SORN the vehicle.
Q. – Can I insure my vehicle under a household insurance policy if I have SORN it?
No. Motorised vehicles are usually excluded from a household policy. To ensure your motorhome and campervan are covered, you should purchase a policy that is specifically designed for these vehicles.
Q. – Is it necessary to insure my vehicle if it is in storage with a SORN?
We recommend you insure your car in the event that it is damaged or stolen while in storage. Many storage sites require you to have insurance for the time that your vehicle will be in storage.
Coronavirus has temporarily stopped any immediate travel plans you had for Easter. Comfort Insurance’s motorhome and campervan insurance policies are designed to cover you in the event that you damage your vehicle. If you need more information on motorhome insurance and SORN, there are many resources that can be found from the providers.
Insurance
Even if you don’t plan to use your motorhome, it is still a good idea to keep the policy, as was mentioned in that last paragraph. Keep your comprehensive insurance policy in place if you want to be protected from damage or theft.
Your insurance can help cover the costs of repairs if your motorhome is damaged. If your vehicle was stolen, and you did not have insurance, you would be forced to pay a lot of money for a new one.
You may also be required to maintain your insurance policy if you are storing your vehicle with a facility.
MOTs
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency announced that due to the Covid-19 epidemic, any MOTs for cars, vans, or motorcycles due after March 30, 2020 will be automatically prolonged by six months. Your insurance policy will continue to be valid as long as your motorhome is in a driving condition. You will also be covered for claims made on your policy. This arrangement will continue for as long as the DVSA extends any extensions.
